If you are looking for a fun activity that will keep kids busy and can be reused over and over again then this DIY Felt Ice Cream Play Mat is for you. It really doesn’t get much easier than this project and it doesn’t take long to put together either. Kids will love creating their own ice creams and decorating them with all sorts of fun bits and pieces. After all who doesn’t love ice cream?!

When I first thought of this idea I initially thought that it would be suited towards preschoolers. How wrong was I! Miss 5 and Miss 8 came home, along with another friend of Miss 8’s and I quickly found myself making up another two DIY felt ice cream play mat sets. The girls loved making their own ice creams and setting up shop. Even with something so simple, it is impressive how imaginative children can be.

This is simple enough to make without a tutorial but there are a few tips to make your ice cream playset which we will show you today. We hope that you are feeling inspired and that your children get as much joy from building their felt ice creams as our girls did.

DIY Felt Ice Cream Play Mat

Seriously, this ice cream play mat can be made in a matter of minutes! AND if you kids are like mine they will be totally immersed in this activity meaning that those couple of minutes spent making it will be well worth the effort.

You Will Need

• Felt of different colors
• Scissors
• A Pen
• Decorations like mini pom poms, beads, and other craft decorations
• A glass or something round to trace around for the ice cream scoops

Have a look through your craft supplies for decorations that will work for decorating ice creams. Yarn cut into little strips would work well for sprinkles. Glitter, beads, you name it chances are it will work.

Just a note, if you have young children please supervise them at all times when working with small items.

How To Make Your Play Mat

Gather all of your supplies. You will need a base piece of felt which the ice cream pieces will be placed on top of so set this piece aside.

Make all of your ice cream pieces. Cut triangles for the cones and circles for the ice cream scoops. Draw around a glass or other round object and cut out. Use a variety of different color felt for different fun ice cream flavors.

Hunt through your craft box and choose supplies that are best suited for decorating ice creams. Our girls love the little pom poms and sparkly decorations but be creative and you will be surprised at the variety of items that will be suitable for decorating ice creams with.

Set-Up & Play

Place all of the ice cream decorations into individual containers or (like we used) cupcake liners. I always like to roughly set up a project before inviting our girls over to take part. So go ahead and create a basic ice cream! Once your children see the ice cream they will quickly get the idea and be eager to create their own.
