The History Of Valentine’s Day
Why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day? Valentine’s Day originated as a day honoring the 3rd-century Christian martyr Saint Valentine however there are a few different stories of who he actually was. It is thought that Saint Valentine performed weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry as it was believed that married men would make bad soldiers. When this was discovered Saint Valentine was sentenced to death. According to legend, Saint Valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his judge, and he wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a farewell before his execution. In 18th-century England, Valentine’s Day grew into an occasion in which couples expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending cards that still continues today.
